A lighter and less expensive Z would delight the aftermarket.
You could beef up whatever component you wanted as
a person's budget allows. Put your extra money into the motor
if you want a fast car ( turbo'd 4s can make big power at high boost levels), or put the extra money into track car suspension components. Give the Z crowd something to build-up themselves. Other than forged internals, we can add just about anything else....including more sound insulation, better brakes, and custom interiors. There is no reason Mazda and Toyota should have this whole segment....Mazda sold 8591 MX-5s in 2015...people will buy these....and with the Z car heritage, it shouldn't be hard to beat Mazda and Toyota performance-wise. Lets hope Nissan has a new Z to sell by the 50th anniversary of the 240Z. Carroll Shelby knew the right formula. Jay Leno endorses this approach. After all, Datsun sold over 30,000 240Z units in 1971 and over 50,000 and 40,000 in 1972 and 1973, respectively. Actually, it was the price ($3500) that made this Japanese sportscar have such a big success in the foreign markets. Its been done before!
